User Account Control (UAC)
Disabling this Will compromise system security
This is for Windows Vista/ 8 only. Basically it gives you a bunch of pop up windows giving you warnings for this or that and annoys you as often as possible. I disable it right away.
- To disable UAC
- Click Start
- Go to Control Panel
- Switch to Classic View (if necessary)
- Open "User Accounts"
- Click on "Turn User Account Control on or off"
- Uncheck the box and click OK.
Get rid of start up programs
Startup Speed Enhancer
- To Stop Startup Programs
- Go to Start
- Run
- Type in "msconfig" and hit enter.
- Go to the "Startup" tab and un-check everything that you don't want starting up along with Windows.
You don't need any of it checked, but if you'd like some of them to start up right away, leave it alone.
If you have a bunch of programs starting up, it can seriously slow startup times and over time more and more programs get added to it, which can slow things down quite a bit. I always have everything unchecked.
If you use a 3rd party Anti Virus/Firewall/Spyware protection etc, it may very well be in this list. To be safe, you may want to leave it checked. Keep in mind you can always start these up on your own though when you feel like it. Un-checking them won't disable them, it just prevents it from starting up automatically when you turn on your computer.
Update/Download
Necessary Programs
This is obvious, but many people don't do it anyway. I'll keep my personal preferences out of it and just list a few good free programs that get the job done. Everyone has their favorites so I can add to/edit this list if anyone wants to give suggestions.
You can go to http://www.download.com and type the name of the program in the box to find it, or Google it.
- Security
- Antivirus - Avast Home Edition, AVG Anti virus, Avira Personal all have free editions to download. Pick your favorite.
- Adware/Spyware protection - Ad-Aware
- Clean/Speed
These are some of the best free programs for registry/junk file cleaning, among other things. It wouldn't hurt to keep a couple or all of these and run them once or twice a week.
- Utilities - Advanced SystemCare Free, CCleaner, Glary Utilities
After downloading and installing programs, you can again go to start, run, type in msconfig, go to startup tab, and remove them from the list if they're in it.
Uninstall
Programs you don't want/need
- To Uninstall Programs
- Start
- Control Panel
- Open up 'Programs and Features'
- Right click on any program in the list you don't want/need, and uninstall it
If you are unsure of what something is, DO NOT UNINSTALL IT until you know.
Update Windows
Always keep it up to date for security purposes/fixes/features
Update Your Drivers
I do this just to stay up to date, but many people recommend only doing this as problems arise. That's because updating your drivers can possibly make things worse. That doesn't usually happen, but it can, particularly if you're not sure what you're doing.
Windows Pretty Extras
This one is a trade off that many won't find worthwhile because you desktop/menus etc will look bad
The plus side is that it will give you a slight speed boost when opening Windows and things like that.
- To Disable Effects
- Start
- Right click 'Computer'
- Go to Properties
- Select 'Advanced System Settings'
- On the advanced tab click on 'Performance Settings'
- Pick adjust for best performance
- Apply and click Ok
Now your computer looks terrible, but it'll be a little faster.
If you can't deal with that, you can select to customize it. The best way to compromise is to check only the very last option, 'Use visual styles on windows and buttons'. I personally also leave 'smooth edges of screen fonts' checked.
Turn off unnecessary services
DON'T MESS WITH THIS IF YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT
Go to start, run, type in services.msc and hit enter. This is a list of all the "services" on your computer. To change the startup type of a service, right click it, select properties, go to the startup type drop down list, and select the startup type you want.
For a list of services, what they do, and if they're safe to disable, you can check http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm
Again, if you don't know read up on this first before messing with it. If you break something (suddenly your Internet no longer works for example..) you can probably just turn the service back on and be back in business. The annoying thing is finding which service was responsible...
Defragment your Hard Drive
Overtime bad crap happens.
You can use Windows' own Defragmenter:
- Defragmenter is located in
- Start
- Programs
- System Tools
- Disk Defragmenter
Ubuntu
Tested on Intrepid Ibex
Disable or Delete Unnecessary Programs
Some programs are unnecessary and may be disabled at your own risk
- To Uninstall/ Disable Programs
- Applications
- Add/Remove Applications
