Hotkeys
From CoCWiki
What are hotkeys
Hotkeys are a third party program used by some players in Call of Combat.
Hotkeys are frowned upon as they are said to give an unfair advantage to that certain player.
How do they work
They run on something called a script, when the function key is pressed, the script will carry out the command. Scripts can be very complicated and are impossible to start from scratch with no knowledge of hotkeys.
When a function key is pressed the mouse will move to the X and Y co-ordinates within a millisecond.
Official CoC Hotkeys Statement
There has been much debate and confusion recently regarding the use of 3rd party programs in general and hotkeys in particular. There has been discussion between staff, between staff and AG COs and between players in the game, and its clearly an emotive issue.
There has been a request for a statement from staff to give clarity to the situation. This is that statement.
The use of hotkeys by players has been going on for at least as long as Call has existed. Indeed I have been told by someone I trust that he knew of players in Chain that used hotkeys. Staff (in various incarnations) have been aware of this to some degree since February 2005 if not earlier.
So, for clarification :
We do not believe that players that use 3rd party software to implement hotkeys should be banned for such behaviour.
We believe the onus is on us (the development staff) to limit the effect of players utilising third party programs, how we do that and the extent of the effect will always be at our discretion.
We reserve the right (because we have the desire) to incorporate hotkeys into the game in the future.
Is there a difference between third party programs like ts/vent and between programs such as hotkeys? Absolutely. Ts and vent sit alongside the game, they enhance (or detract from) the team aspect of the game, speed gear and autohotkey bind into the game affecting at a physical level the intrinsic gameplay. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does create a significantly sloped playing field when compared to players not using these programs.
Another way to look at it would be that in a 1v1, TS offers no advantages if only one guy has it. The same cannot be said of autohotkey and speed gear.
We cannot effect any changes in the current version of the game, however we reserve the right to limit the effect of 3rd party programs within Beta and future versions of the game. How we achieve that will depend on the practicalities involved, the limiting may involve booting from gamerooms, or may simply inhibit the effect of hotkeys. Only the future will decide.
If this is something you want to achieve then I would urge you to play Beta and respond as constructively as possible to the current issues within it. The more information that can be provided on the three main issues would be greatly appreciated :
Possible cover issues caused by the pseudo-warping A definite LoS Bug (press F2 then submit bug report if this occurs). The window / aiming bug (Does anyone have video footage of this occuring? ideally showing the map and the control panel)
Finally. We hope and plan to incorporate hotkeys into the game. When and how we implement this will be decided in the medium term. We will communicate our plans slightly better than we have in the past.
I hope this clarifies the situation, though I doubt it does.
